Honda launched the XR230 in Japan in March 2005 as a light, low-seat off-roader that replaced both the SL230 and XL230. It used the air-cooled 223 cc SOHC single from the SL230 with electric start, a six-speed gearbox, Pro-Link rear suspension and disc brakes at both ends. Honda pitched it as a first off-road bike for beginners, women and smaller riders, with an 805 mm seat and 111 kg dry weight.
